Ancient skincare practices to live by

In this modern age of social media and information overload, at NEVE, we find much comfort and solace in ancient, well loved practices. Many of these practices combine simplicity and efficiency, perfect for modern life. In the world of skincare and herbalism, a world where we spend a lot of time, we find this solace again and again.

When we wonder what could soothe inflamed tissue, whether it be on our skin or in our gut, we know that calendula has been relied upon as a remedy for inflammation since the middle ages. When we feel exhausted and lost in our thoughts, we reach for vetiver essential oil, knowing that these beautiful essential oils have been enjoyed for their aromatherapy benefits since 3500 BC.

Ancient Rituals

When it comes to our skin, we love to sink into the simple, sumptuous ritual of an oil cleanse, knowing that oil cleansing was enjoyed in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Romans loved an oil cleanse in their famed bath houses, massaging olive oil onto the body before taking a metal scraper tool known as a strigil, and using it to remove the oil and any dirt.

Sometimes when we want to simplify life, much can be learned from looking back and learning from those who came before us. Never was this more true than with oil cleansing. As a skincare formulator, NEVE co-founder Sarah, spends a lot of time exploring products and has found there has been nothing more effective at soothing and repairing her skin than oil cleansing, bringing with it the chance for a deeply grounding daily ritual.

If your skin is dry, congested, or lacking in vitality, then a good oil cleanse could make the world of difference. The beauty of oil cleansing is that is does not strip the skin of its own natural oils and burden the skin’s PH the way that many other cleansers do. As the skin naturally produces its own oils, applying oil to cleanse creates a ‘like attracts like’ situation where the cleansing oil helps to lift dirt and blockages within the skin.

Oil cleansing was the first change that Sarah made to her routine once she started studying skincare formulation and made the biggest difference to her sensitive, congested, and dry skin.

Pure and Simple Techniques

Speaking of oil cleansing Sarah said: "Oil cleansing it’s something I recommend to so many people. I take deep pleasure in ending my day with a silky oil cleanse, applying 4 pumps of award winning Tri-Elixir onto my skin, gently massaging it in to lift makeup and daily grime. The Tri-Elixir has a beautiful slip and glide for oil cleansing. It is rich in regenerative and moisturising oils such as borage and cranberry, and its spa-like aromatics give the mind a welcome reset too."

If you’re new to oil cleansing simply massage 3-5 drops of Tri-Elixir onto your face and neck, taking a little time to melt any daily dirt, before removing with a hand hot face cloth. Avoid using too hot water, which will dry the skin and put it under pressure. With gentle strokes, remove all of the oil from your skin to reveal deeply cleansed, nourished and plumped skin. Oil cleansing is a simple, and effective technique that has stood the test of time, and could revitalise your skin too. Do you already enjoy oil cleansing? Will you be giving it a go?
